Forgotten Friend Code of Ethics

  1. Adoptions Fees - We reserve the right to set adoption fees at our discretion. These fees are based on a variety of factors including retail value. Adoption fees serve to protect reptiles from individuals who would wrongfully adopt them for commercial purposes. 100% of adoption fees go toward operating expenses at Forgotten Friend. We aim to keep any fees significantly lower than "market prices" to make reptile adoptions more affordable to good homes. We also reserve the right to lower or waive adoption fees at our discretion if it helps place reptiles in the best homes.
  2. Age Requirements - You must be 18 to adopt a reptile through Forgotten Friend (sorry kids).
  3. We only provide adoptions to experienced reptile keepers and reserve the right to refuse adoption to anyone at our discretion.
  4. While we accept scheduled reptile drop-offs from anywhere, we will make free local pick-ups within Lancaster County, PA whenever possible. We never charge a dime to take in a reptile.
  5. Forgotten Friend is a private nonprofit organization with limited space and resources. We will not allow our rescue to become overcrowded to the point that animals become neglected, and must turn away reptiles in some cases. Even if we can't take in your reptile here at the rescue, we'll still help you find a home for it while it remains in your care. Our Public Reptile Adoption Forum and our extensive Reptile Rescue Network are tools to help anyone who has to give up any reptile, whether or not Forgotten Friend can take it in at our rescue.
  6. Shipping - We prefer never to ship a reptile if we can find a good home locally. However, we will ship reptiles within the U.S. in certain cases. We ONLY ship overnight for next morning delivery. Don't ask for anything longer. We only ship if we are unable to find a good home locally. We only ship when weather conditions are suitable. Our live animal shipments are always insulated and heated/cooled as necessary. Forgotten Friend is a verified shipper with Delta Dash and we also use DHL, UPS, and USPS who offer overnight live animal shipments. We have made the significant decision to offer shipping with our reptile adoptions realizing that many reptile specialists, as well as better climates, are far from Lancaster, PA.
  7. Forgotten Friend is proud to work with countless experienced reptile owners, as well as reptile experts and specialists, including ethical reptile business operators, especially reptile education programs. However, we DO NOT provide adoptions for the purpose of resale or breeding.
  8. We reserve the right to ask for pictures of your setup, or send someone out to make sure your setup is appropriate for the reptile you plan to adopt. Not being completely truthful in describing your setup in the adoption process will eliminate you as a future home for any of our reptiles, so please be truthful. Remember we want these guys to go to the best homes.
  9. As a nonprofit organization, we hold ourselves to a very high standard with rescue finances. We believe in budgeting and keeping clear financial records. We maintain community checking accounts at PNC Bank (formerly Bank of Lancaster County), registered as Forgotten Friend, Inc. All rescue finances are operated through these rescue accounts. All major purchases with rescue funding must be approved by our all-volunteer board of directors.
